| CAMBRIAN HERITAGE RAILWAY ----- Llynclys to Penygarreg Lane. | Managed by the CAMBRIAN RAILWAYS TRUST with the intention to ---
“Secure the restoration of the Cambrian Railways in order to preserve the unique Railway Heritage of Oswestry and to provide a visitor attraction of national significance.”
Despite the fact that nearly 38 years have elapsed since the last British Rail passenger trains ran through Oswestry, a surprising amount of the Cambrians rich railway heritage survives today, waiting to be re-used in the opening of this new Heritage Railway.
During mid 2003 the Trust became aware of the possibility of obtaining large scale European funding as part of the enlargement of the existing tourism package for the area.
The funding was secured and the Trust has since been tirelessly working, successfully to establish the first stage of the railway that now runs from Llynclys South Station to Penygarreg Lane Pant, a return trip of two miles distance.
Future stages will eventually link Llynclys to Oswestry, Blodwel, Gobowen and the main Shrewsbury to Chester Rail network then south to Llanymynech and the welsh borders.
Our first day of scheduled services occurred on Saturday 23rd July 2005, when the 2-car DMU set ran service trains. On the previous Wednesday, 20th. July, specially invited guests saw Owen Paterson M.P., the member of Parliament for North Shropshire, officially open the line.
Over the winter months contractors and volunteers have established new visitor facilities, these have been created with the financial assistance of grants from Defra and the Alsf administered fund from Shropshire County Council.
You can now experience the recreated period waiting room, use the adjacent refurbished buffet car which is stabled in the platform where you can refresh yourself and afterwards browse in the sales area. New toilets inc. disabled facilities are now provided.
The Station yard has a number of historic vehicles on display, the most recent arrival being 7821 Ditcheat Manor noted for its appearance in the recent Agatha Christies TV episode, the 10.30 limited.
2006 Services commence on 14/17th April, 29/1st May inc. then weekends into October.Visit our website for special events, membership details and future projects.
